Firefox 4.0 New Redesign – Early Screenshots

As you can see in the screenshot above, the Firefox folks are toying with the idea of a Google Chrome-like tabs-on-top interface.

n addition, Mozilla summarizes the pros and cons of the two designs very succinctly:

Positives:
- Save Vertical Space
- Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity – Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to.
- Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls

Negatives:
- Breaks Consistency/Familiarity – Moving things confuses existing users.
- Title is MIA – With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab.
- Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs – Takes longer to mouse to a tab.
- Lost Space – Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.

Apple Tablet To be Launched in September

Rumors of an Apple tablet – essentially a large iPhone or iPod touch – have been swirling for over a year. Today the Financial Times is adding credibility to the rumors, reporting that Apple is rushing to debut the device in time for the Christmas shopping season.

The article swings back and forth between the new device and a series of record label deals Apple could launch simultaneously, but here are the points specifically related to the tablet:

Screen size: “may be up to 10 inches diagonally”, touch sensitive (of course)

Phone capability? Unlikely – it’s more like a large iPod Touch than an iPhone.

Wireless connectivity: Same as the iPod Touch, with the ability to download media through iTunes.

Kindle Rival? May provide the ability to read books, creating a rival to Amazon’s Kindle.

Launch date: By Christmas, possibly as early as September.

AT&T blocks 4Chan !

Firing one of the first shots in the net neutrality war, AT&T has blocked 4chan’s /b/ image board. AT&T subscribers are unable to connect to /b/ and /r9k/ (both of which are hosted on img.4chan.org). However, subscribers can get on any of the so-called «worksafe» boards that 4chan.org offers.

The problem seems to be present only for wired connections only (AT&T Mobility customers are not affected). The problem is not caused by an DNS-error, as traceroutes indicates that AT&T is dropping img.4chan.org requests in the AT&T network.

Slashdot, Digg & Reddit are now running stories that are rapidly being upvoted about the topic.

As citizens of a free internet, what do we think about this kind of censorship?

Get an iphone 3G for $49

When the iPhone 3G S debuted last month, AT&T held on to the previous model as a less expensive option. This version is available now for just $49, but there’s a catch. The units selling at this price are not brand new — they have been refurbished. This means they have been purchased and then later returned for some reason.

As AT&T says:

Refurbished phones are previously owned devices that have been unused or lightly used and returned during the 30-day trial period. Each refurbished phone is independently quality tested and loaded with the latest software to meet current factory standards. Some refurbished iPhone 3G devices will have minor scratches.
Refurbished iPhone 3G devices carry a warranty of 90 days or more.

Getting this price requires agreeing to a two-year iPhone service contract. The regular price for a non-refurbished device with 8 GB of storage and this same service agreement is $99.

Twitter to introduce a new homepage

Twitter’s home page definitely gets some Zen cred by consisting of little more than a text field that asks, “What are you doing?” But that’s apparently about to change.

According to Kara Swisher at AllThingsD, there will very soon be a major revamp to Twitter.com.

The reason is to give potential Twitter users–you know, the ones who are curious about what these “tweets” on CNN are–a better idea of exactly what the service is and what they can do with it.

This is slated to launch next week.

“You can try (Twitter) out without having to sign up, so you can get an idea of what Twitter is before you use it,” Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told AllThingsD. “We need to do a better job of explaining ourselves to people who hear about us and then have no idea what do to.”

Part of this has gone live already: a section called “Twitter 101,” geared toward businesses that want to use the microblogging service for publicity, marketing, or customer relations. Co-founder Biz Stone announced this in a blog post on Thursday evening.

“We coordinated with business students and writers to surface some interesting findings, best practices, steps for getting started, and case studies,” Stone wrote. “The results demonstrate how customers are getting value out of Twitter and suggest techniques businesses can employ to enhance that value.”

This is important because of troubling (albeit unofficial) statistics that Twitter’s ubiquity may be fleeting. The majority of new users reportedly don’t stick around, and third-party studies have found that a small number of active members are responsible for the vast majority of “tweets.”

Getting a “real” home page could also be key for future revenue opportunities on Twitter’s end. The site is so lightweight that many avid users rarely access it at all, instead using third-party clients like Twhirl or TweetDeck. For Twitter, which still doesn’t have a head of sales, getting people back to its homepage could be the first step in making a buck or two off it.
