Well Canonicalization is a Search Engine’s term Set by Google. Well as for Your Websites URL , You a Human will be able to access a website by using the following links :

http://yourwebsite.com/
http://yourwebsite.com/index.html
http://www.yourwebsite.com/index.html
But for a bot All those 4 links Or More will be Completely Nonidentical or Different .Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages.
So to make sure that Google chooses the best URL for your website , you might want to redirect all the above links to a single domain or link : http://www.yourwebsite.com . This can be done by a simple 301 redirection for all old pages.You will also have to pick the best URL to be used to advertise on Websites and Sponsoring your link .

5) Optimize all your HTML Tags
Well in the 2nd point above i did specify about How to optimize your Meta Tag with a website full of details relating to it. But Meta Tags are not the only Tag that needs to be optimized , you need to optimize your Title Tags , Header tags , formatting tags and image-alt tags . You might want to specify a relatively better keyword for such tags and make better use of them .

Title tag : In this tag you can display the websites Title eg : Your Websites name : Your Website details ( keep this less than 90 characters or keywords)
Well Your Header Tag Consists of H1 , H2 , H3 , H4 and so on .
In your H1 header tag : You have to specify your Websites Main Heading. eg : Your Content Main Subject
It’s the same thing for other Header Tags : H2 , H3 and so on .
